PPP, Part 9, “Brain” vs “Mind”

Greetings, Friendlies. :)

Taking a moment to articulate how I am understanding/using the words “brain” and “mind”.

In this format I try to use the word “brain” to specifically speak about the organ of the brain. The 1.3kg mass of tissue housed inside the skull.

“Mind”, on the other hand, is more loosey goosey. It includes an understanding of the underlying function of the brain (actually the entirety of the Central and Peripheral Nervous Systems), but it has more to do with experience. Both conscious and subconscious experience.

So in Dhp 1:1, “Experience is made by mind”, I’d say “mind” is definitely the word here. I would not say “experience is made by the brain”.

Perhaps the most obvious framing: if a human has died, and we are looking at the corpse, there is still a brain. There is not, as I understand it, a mind.

Yes. This is loosey goosey, and yes, there is plenty of overlap. But there it is.

Your thoughts?

Good question…

What about if a person is on life support?

Is it the mind or the brain? Is it just the brain that says, yes, I’m getting oxygen so keep everything going, or is there a bit of the mind that can understand the experience it is having?
