PPP, Part 11.3, The Interpreter Module, Meta-Data

Greetings, Friendlies. :)

Last time we pointed out that the Interpreter module is only as good as the data it receives. A hugely important thing it does not receive is meta-data about the incoming information.

Michael Gazzaniga in Who’s in Charge: “The interpreter receives the results of the computations of a multitude of modules. It does not receive the information that there are multitudes of modules. It does not receive the information about how the modules work.” (Emphasis added.)

It also does not receive information about the environment/evolutionary pressures that led to the entire system arising as it did. Nor does it know that the present environment is vastly different from that earlier one.

It does not seem to have any ability to analyze/question incoming information or its own interpretations (that seems to happen in other parts of the brain). The interpreter module knows a lot, it is a powerful instrument for navigating society and the environment more broadly, but it does not know what it does not know.

Happy avijjā-ing!
